Update the Look of Old Paneling
Many homes have varnished wood paneling on their walls. Some owners desire to paint over these paneled walls to create a brighter, more updated look, without the expense of sheetrock. But how does someone do this resurfacing properly?
Prep the work area
Prep work is critical. There are two schools of thought here. One is to use a commercially prepared product that is a varnish and stain remover. If you opt for this route, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The other option is to paint over the paneling without stripping the varnish off. Do your due diligence of researching which is best for your situation.
This article will focus on how to paint paneling without first stripping off the varnish. Thoroughly wash the walls with a degreasing detergent and fine steel wool, and be sure to rinse the walls of all detergent as well.
If you find any nail holes or dents in the paneling, fill with a wood putty as flush as possible and let dry.
You will now lightly sand the walls with a 150 gauge sandpaper, be sure to get the groves as well. When you are pleased that the sanding is finished, wipe the walls with mineral spirits to remove all dust and grime, then allow to thoroughly dry, giving it a day or two.
Apply a good quality oil based primer paint with a high quality roller brush or paint brush. Don’t skimp of quality of product or tool here, as this will greatly affect the finished results. You don’t want to be seeing brush or roller marks. Be sure to prime all the cracks and crevices as well.
You are now ready to apply paint. Again, use good paint and rollers or brushes. Apply 2 – 3 coats of paint, allowing it to thoroughly dry in between coats. If you find any drips or runs, you can lightly sand those out with very fine sandpaper and paint over those sections carefully.
This can dramatically change the look of a room and brighten it up.
